The SOS Social Centre of São Vicente was officially inaugurated!

The Cape Verde Island of São Vicente was celebrating on 16 April 2009! The day marked the official inauguration of the SOS Social Centre constructed in the outskirt of Mindelo, the main city of the island. Attended by the president of Cape Verde, Mr Pedro Pires and the mayor of São Vicente, Mrs Isaura Gomes, the event was coordinated by the national director of SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde, Mr Dionisio Pereira. Guests also included key members of SOS Children's Villages Luxembourg, various representatives from Luxembourg* and of course children and families attending the centre.

Established a year ago, the SOS Social Centre of São Vicente has the following mission: "to guide families and make them a solid unit with capacities to resist external forces and successfully fulfil their social functions".

During the inaugural speech, President Pires called for "solidarity and generosity towards others", pointing out that "we need to know how to give without humiliating the other one". As he reminded that the history of SOS Children's Villages began 60 years ago with the vision of the late Hermann Gmeiner, its founder, President Pires also recognised that though his vision and determination he has "built an hymn to peace and solidarity".

Mr Dionísio Pereira, national director of SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde, took the floor and explained that such a project is a way to embrace more children and work with their families. "We are working with families in strengthening their structure and preventing child abandonment, but also with communities, to develop their capacities to meet the needs of their vulnerable children and solve their own problems". Mr Pereira reminded that the best place for a child to live is his family. "But for this, we need to make sure families are able to protect and care for their children", he added.

In her speech, the mayor of São Vicente, Mrs Isaura Gomes, stressed the need to take into account that Cape Verde has seen an increasing number of abandoned children. "Initiatives like this [the SOS Social Centre of São Vicente] have to fill several gaps in the policy of child protection", she added. "In São Vincent, the unemployment rate of people above 15 years old is by far the highest in Cape Verde (23.2%, against a national average of 17.3%). Similarly, the number of orphans or abandoned children is growing, making the island the second Cape Verdean pole of juvenile delinquency. The situation is of great concern for local authorities", she explained.

As she stated, "the SOS Social Centre is without a doubt a great asset!". "The approach and awareness done with street children has had positive changes and many of them have been participating in activities organised by the centre. Since the centre opened, we noticed much difference with regards to the behaviour of vulnerable children and adolescents who attend the centre", she added.

Mrs Maria da Luz Conceição, the coordinator of the SOS Social Centre highlighted the work done at the centre. Every day, the centre is busy with all sorts of activities organised for children and families: counselling sessions, sensitization sessions on key issues affecting families and children in São Vicente, support in establishing and training community groups to improve the social situation of women, children and youths in the whole community, feeding programme for some vulnerable children, sports and other entertaining activities, trainings of mothers in various areas, to help them find a job and provide them with skills among others. The centre also took over the implementation of the family strengthening programme [beneficiaries also benefit from various services offered at the centre and are also supported with food packages, medical and educational assistance according to their need]. Additionally, 13 street children were 'interns' [the Social Centre has a special unit to accommodate street children] and benefited from a holistic support [nutrition, healthcare and hygiene, education or training, counselling]. Three of them were recently successfully reintegrated with their families or a foster family!

"We want to change the behaviour in children and families", said Mrs Conceição. And over the past year, that was feasible, thanks to the collaboration of partners, sponsors and friends, both national and international. "We are always counting on your generosity and spirit of sharing for the well-being of our children and families", concluded Mrs Conceição.

"I like to be a part of the 'SOS family'" - a beneficiary addresses the public

9-year-old Mircea represented all children and families receiving the support of the SOS Social Centre and took the floor to end the speeches, before the unveiling of the plaque:

"I like to be part of the 'SOS family', because I feel that here we are like brothers and sisters and the SOS Social Centre is like our second home! It's very important for orphaned and abandoned children and needy families in difficulty! It's very safe and offers great social aid.

My family attends the SOS Social Centre and is part of its family strengthening programme. We enjoy the support we receive, like the school monitoring, the vocational training, the food support and the medical and psychological support.”

My brother was a street child, and thanks to the work of the social centre, he now lives in our family again.

I have another brother who lives on the street, but with the support of the centre, I believe he can also return to our family.

I and my family are proud to be part of the 'SOS family'!"

*The SOS Social Centre of São Vicente was co-financed by the government of Luxembourg and SOS Children's Villages Luxembourg. The municipality of São Vicente also contributed and constructed a sports field in the centre's premises. As of April 2009, the centre registered 613 child beneficiaries below 18 (13 street children - 'interns', 150 children (coming from 54 families) attending regularly activities organised at the centre and 450 (coming from 132 families) part of the family strengthening programme). A team of 11 staff run the centre (administrative, social, training staff) and four additional staff upkeep and look after the premises and gardens.

President Pedro Pires launches the 25th anniversary celebrations of SOS Children’s Villages Cape Verde

2009 is a year of celebrations and special events for SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde. First on the agenda, was the visit of the country's president, Pedro Pires, to the SOS Children's Villages programmes on the island of Santiago.

Not only does 2009 marks the 60 years of existence of SOS Children's Villages as a non-governmental social development organisation working to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children, but it also marks the 25th anniversary of SOS Children's Villages in Cape Verde! To celebrate this silver anniversary, SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde has planned several activities. The kick off of the celebrations was marked by the visit on 28 March 2009 of the president of Cape Verde, Mr Pedro Pires, to the two SOS Children's Villages in São Domingos and Assomada, as well as the family strengthening programme in Praia.

The president was also accompanied by Mrs Madalena Neves, minister of social solidarity and a few other members of his office. Together with Mrs Isabelle Clemence Carvalho, the chairlady of SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde, Mr. Orlando Mascarenhas, an SOS 'friend' part of the honour committee for the celebrations of the anniversaries [the 25th of SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde and the 60th of the organisation], Mr Dionísio Pereira, the national director of SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde, and other staff members from the national office, the whole delegation embarked on an 'SOS tour' day.

The visit started with a stop at the community centre in Achada Santo Antonio, in Praia, the capital, where SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde initiated, together with the community, a family strengthening programme with the aim of supporting vulnerable children in their natural family and community environment and helping the care-givers properly care for their needs. There, the president met some beneficiary families and questioned them on the impact the programme was having on their lives. All unanimously answered the programme was essential to their lives and to the community.

The children also participated and talked to the president about their schools and their hobbies. They were really pleased with the president's visit, who is very admired by the Cape Verdean Children in general, and all child beneficiaries present that day were proud. "It's not every day you can talk with the president!", explained most of them. Mr Pires encouraged them with sweet words and congratulated the programme for its good results, with a particular attention to one of the beneficiary who is one of the best students of the district. "This is a programme that should be an example for other districts", said Mr. Pires, adding " it is not only a support to the families but also an initiative that fills many gaps and helps the state to promote the quality of life in the country".

This was followed by the visit of the SOS Children's Village in São Domingos, where the delegation was welcomed with great enthusiasm and offered a snack prepared by SOS mother Luizete from the 'Luxembourg' house, with the help of her children. Mother Luizete had prepared several delicacies famous in her island of origin (Fogo island - which is also the island of origin of Mr Pires) and on the island of Santiago. The snacks included coffee, cuscus, maize cakes and 'filhós' (fritters).

Luizete and her children were very pleased with Mr Pires visit! Before the family gave him and the delegation a tour of their house, Luizete had the opportunity to talk with Mr Pires about their island (Fogo) and the activities that she develops as an SOS mother. When leaving, the president praised her for the food, for her sympathy and for the affection with which she cares for her children.

The tour of the President ended in SOS Children's Village Assomada, where some children welcomed Mr Pires with a demonstration of their Capoeira skills [an Afro-Brazilian dance form that incorporates self-defense maneuvers, vary famous in Cape Verde], under the supervision of their coach, Mr Diogo, who is also the driver of the SOS Children’s Villages in Assomada. The President was impressed and pleased with the demonstration and asked them to repeat. A request promptly answered by Mr. Diogo and his pupils!

For the event, the village had also organised a photo exhibition showing the work of SOS mothers. Everyone was involved in making this day a memorable one and all were proud to show the good work of SOS Children's Villages in Cape Verde. Bob, a former SOS youth was more than happy to take care of the music animation on that day and entertained everyone with his songs and guitar playing!

In his speech, President Pires paid a tribute to the founder of SOS Children's Villages, Hermann Gmeiner and the work he has initiated, which now helps so many children in the world. He also expressed his appreciation for bringing this solidarity mission in Cape Verde, and emphasised on "the valuable work that SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde has done during these two and a half decades in the country, by giving through its family care model, a home and care to vulnerable children, and also by educating, training, and transmitting them human values such as sharing, friendship and solidarity". He added that "this availability, the willingness to understand, support and take into account the rights of others, in this case children, are very important values that must be shared". President Pires finally concluded by wishing "the administration, mothers, kindergarten teachers, girls and boys a year of great success that will enrich the SOS Children's Villages human heritage."

During the tour, Mr Dionísio Pereira took time to explain in details the various activities undertaken by the organisation in the country. He also explained that the programme of celebrations throughout the year includes a number of cultural activities and recreational activities for the children, as well as workshops on the SOS child protection policy and radio programmes.

The programme also includes, on April 16, the official inauguration of the SOS Social Centre in São Vincent (another island of Cape Verde), chaired by President Pires. Mr Pereira, explained that the positive work done by SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde will from now on focus on supporting more needy children and their families in their communities, thanks to the newly built SOS Social Centre in São Vincent and to the various family strengthening programmes operated in the country.

SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde started operations in 1984, with its SOS Children's Village and Kindergarten in Assomada. By the end of 2008, the two SOS Children's Villages in Sao Domingos and Assomada and the SOS Youth Facility in Assomada were home for 176 children and youths. The SOS Kindergartens of Sao Domingos and Assomada counted 191 pupils (12 of them are SOS children) and 1022 children from 296 families were supported through the SOS Social Centre/family strengthening programmes in the islands of Santiago and São Vincent.
The program of celebrations by the National Director of the SOS Children’s Villages, includes a number of cultural activities and recreational sports that includes workshops on child protection policy, children's games, radio programs and others activity.

"WHITE LOTUS FLOWER"

"White Lotus! Flower of magic and mystery,
which unfold through the physical elements of the whole matter,
wonderful symbolism of the human soul!

As the human soul, you will get to land, painfully,
in a hidden and hard struggle of all times,
in the ceaseless work of your roots,
the maintenance of the plant gross and deformed,
which creates cracks in the water,
winning the open air, opened in large sheets
to the splendour of the sun and, finally,
flowering in the free space, radiant, beautiful and immaculate!

And when your corolla focuses on the mirrored surface of the lakes,
the petals of snow which rock in the breeze its spotless whiteness,
forever lost the memory of mud, where your roots goes to redouble and sink,
looking forward to reaping for you the pure essence of life that inspires you”.

Families become victims of violence in Gaza

While the SOS Children's Village Rafah remains unharmed, dozens of families who receive support from SOS Children's Villages' family strengthening programmes have been severely affected by the violence that has erupted in the Gaza Strip.

The violence in the Gaza Strip has affected dozens of beneficiaries of the SOS Children's Villages family strengthening programme (FSP) in the area. The Social Centre has been closed since the beginning of the Israeli campaign on 27 December and co-workers and volunteers have been advised to stay at home and communicate via telephone. According to reports, a number of government buildings close to the social centre have been destroyed by Israeli air strikes.
According to Ihsan Redwan, the national FSP coordinator in the Gaza Strip, a 13 year-old child from a family in the FSP from the northern town of Jabaliya has been severely wounded. The hospital, which has been operating well above capacity since the beginning of the recent conflict escalation, had to discharge him despite his critical health condition.

Meanwhile, five families in the FSP from Jabaliya have been displaced after their houses were destroyed by air raids and two more have abandoned their houses out of fear that they will be targeted. The families have either moved in with relatives or into UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) schools in the town. Families in the area’s FSP have been suffering from shortages of basic food supplies, including flour. Our local community based organisation partners have been trying to address this problem and have already succeeded in delivering some essential food items. Moreover, houses of several families in the FSP from the towns of Khan Yunis, Deir Elbalah and El Burij were destroyed and their inhabitants forced to seek shelter elsewhere.

In Rafah, the situation remains dire for seven families who were living close to the Egyptian border and fled to UNRWA schools to seek refuge. One of the houses has been reportedly damaged by the air strikes. SOS Children's Village Rafah and our local partners have been delivering basic food items to the families.

A large number of children from families participating in the FSP are suffering from psychological disorders as a result of the conflict escalation, including enuresis (bedwetting) and insomnia, among other things. SOS Children's Villages will address this as soon as some calm returns to the area since at the moment all medical personnel are overwhelmed with emergencies.

The FSP is assisting 900 children (187 families) by providing food parcels, schooling and child care activities, among other basic needs. FSP in the Gaza Strip has also been training care givers to help them run their own micro-projects by providing management skills and literacy courses and raising awareness on children's and women's rights.
